Evaluating Myself as a Communicator
When I was evaluating myself as a communicator, I knew I was not the kind of person who likes to speak in public, in particular in front of large groups. however, if I had to do it, I would. I mean, I would be nervous leading up to it, but I would get myself through it. I wondered if others knew this aspect about me too. Also, do I show my nervousness in my facial expressions or through body language?
As I read through the details of my listening style profile, along with one of my friends who filled out the evaluation, I knew which category I would be in and so did she. We were both right. I knew I was more people-oriented than any other category because I am not on a time schedule like group 4 is, or detailed oriented as group 3 suggests. In addition, when it came to reviewing the rating scale for my verbal aggressiveness, I scored "moderate" on all three evaluations. I admit there are a couple of times where I lost my cool, yet I felt I had good reason. If anyone were to ask me if I would do these instances over again, I may answer yes. Then again, I may answer no because it was a learning experience for me in the end.
Recently, I have noticed that I tend to tune out or roll my eyes more when certain people are speaking, in particular during staff meetings. It bothers me that they continue to interrupt or contribute irrelevant information which prolongs the meetings longer than they should be (or at least my opinion). Others have noticed this about me too, which has made me realize that I need to be more in control of my facial expressions and give the courtesy and respect to my co-workers that they deserve.

I obtained moderate too in all of the results. Assessing ourselves as communicators was a very powerful assignment, and I am sure it make all of us reflect about us as communicators, and even if we obtained good results create goals to improve anyway.
ReplyDeleteHi Trisha. Great post. I am the same way. I am a very introvert person. Now like you stated, if I had to I would. My problem is that I if I'm real nervous and I have to get in front of a crowd to talk or read something, I tends to talk fast. What are some strategies that you use to overcome your nervousness?
