My Family Culture

When I think about my family's culture, I think about our holiday traditions, the cultural food we all like to eat, and the closeness I experience from being part of my family. It is difficult to answer this question because there are not any specific items that come to mind; however, there are a couple of items that when I see, I think of my family.

I come from a musical family who love to sing and play instruments. When I was younger, my aunt and uncle turned their garage into a small recording studio. We used to enjoy going in there and using the equipment. We once recorded our own Christmas tape! Also for Christmas, we would go caroling around the neighborhood. Even today, at family get-togethers, either my dad or my aunt will bring a guitar and we would belt out in song. I guess one item I would bring is a guitar because it reminds me of my family's past and present.

Another thing that comes to mind when I think about my family is the Indonesian food we enjoy eating from time to time. The spices and sauces are so different than other cultures, yet so similar. Because sate (meat skewers),gado gado (steamed vegetables with a peanut butter sauce), and hot eggs are some of my favorite foods to eat, I would bring along the spices and/or sauces need to make these tasty dishes.

Lastly, since my family means so much to me, I would bring either a photo book with pictures of all the adventures we went on or a picture collage of some of the most memorable times we spent together. The pictures would even include friends who I consider as part of my family.

Honestly, all I need with me is my family. They make up a lot of who I am and have instilled in me beliefs and values that I would love to share with those around me.

  1. Hi Trisha. Lovely. It's just so joyous when family is able to get together and just have fun with one another and just make wonderful memories with each other. It's great to know that everyone is getting along and just having fun. If you only had the opportunity to take one of your items out the three you chose, which would you choose from? Great post.

  2. Trisha,
Understanding how when it all truly comes down to having no material items, you family is still quite paramount for you offers a great insight into the value and emotions you have with your loved ones. I think you choice of spices and sauces is such a great way to teach others about your culture and also an avenue to learn from them as you could be taught new dishes to make.
