Research that Benefits Children and Families
I found an interesting article that depicts both the positive and negative effects television programs have on children. Growing up, my siblings and I watched our fair share of television, no more than the average child of today. We were limited on our television time, but also back then we spent most of our free time playing outside with our neighborhood friends. With that being said, I feel that watching television during early childhood did not negatively effect us. Now-a-days, it seems that some members of society believe that watching television programs is harmful to children's behaviors and health. Hence why I was searching for an article that was related to this topic.
In the article, Effects of Television Viewing on Social Behavior of Elementary School Students: A Qualitative Study (2017), it describes how watching television can support pro-social behaviors, create effective communication skills, and teaches ethics and etiquette. In addition, the article states some negative effects of watching television during early childhood such as aggression and antisocial behaviors.
I encourage you to take a look at this article and tell me what you think. Thanks!

Hello Trisha,
ReplyDeleteI believe that children should not watch television before the age of two years old. I also believe that children can learn more form hands on experiences than from watching t.v. Watching videos and t.v. can cause delays in children's brain development and have a negative effect on their language, reading, and memory skills. I think it is used most as a "baby sitter" for children to keep their attention, sitting still, and pick up behaviors that negative. Now a days children are more on tablets, phones, and Ipads than learning through free play. There are both positive and negative from watching television, but children should be able to learn from their home and school environment to develop and master skills.

Trisha,
ReplyDeleteI too grew up watching a fair amount of television as my family did not set limits for how much my siblings and myself were allowed to watch. I feel the quantity is not as much of an issue but the quality of the programs children are watching. Too often I have had my own four and five year old students letting me know of quite inappropriate shows or videos games they would be watching at home. I do not even let my own teenager watch some of these shows so it always baffled me when my students were retelling me the contents of the most recent episode of "The Walking Dead". I agree the right programing can offer many benefits to young children so I do not tend to press upon others limits but instead refer many of them to Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/) as this is a wonderful resource with reviews of all types of media from parents, children, and also professional in the field of working with children. If you have not explored this website, please do when you have the opportunity. I use it quite often when my son asks to watch a new show.
