Professional Goal, Hopes, and Dreams
I have worked as an early childhood professional for quite some time now and there has always been discussions about what qualifies a teacher or professional as high-quality. Is it the education he/she receives? Does it depend on how many years experience she/he has? Does he/she work well with others including children, families and colleagues? Is he/she willing to learn new things and open to new ideas? I feel it is not just one aspect that makes a high-quality teacher/professional, but a balance between a few different aspects.
Of course, an education is needed. I feel that is a necessity. It gives teachers the knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices for children. In addition, teachers learn various strategies to best support children and their families, how to observe and assess children's development and skills, and how to create a safe and inviting environment to enhance learning. Commitment and passion for early childhood is also a necessity. It takes a special person to be able to work with diverse, young children and their families in an ever changing environment and a willingness to continue to be a "student" themselves to keep up-to-date on new information regarding early childhood.
As I continue to develop professionally and through this program, I would like to one day challenge myself with more of an administrative role. I enjoy being a teacher; however, being an administrator would allow me to work with children and their families in a different capacity. Additionally, I would like to be a mentor to people entering the early childhood field. I believe I can learn from them as much as they could learn from me.
